The History of Plastic Surgery and Interesting Facts

Even as early as early 800 B.C. there were documents stating that physicians were using skin grafts for reconstruction. The huge development of the practice and division of reconstructive versus plastic cosmetic procedures began during the World War I where doctors began dealing with patients injured during the war. Due to the development of powerful weapons, surgeons began to see injuries that they had never seen before, like crushed jaws, missing parts of the body along with huge holes in faces and skulls.
That was the time when reconstructive surgery began to take on the plastic cosmetic approach since some doctors were beginning to dedicate their entire lives and professions to those who were severely blemished in war. It was from these professionals who sharpened their skills treating the soldiers, marines and airmen that the two common categories of plastic surgery appeared.

Operations that are not “elective”, are usually defined as reconstructive surgery. Focusing on returning the body part that is affected back to its more natural form and former function. This category of reconstructive surgery includes correcting abnormal structures that are related to birth defects, injury or other trauma, disease or infection. There are three commonly performed surgeries in the United States. These are related to tumour ablation, breast reconstruction and hand surgery. Later it includes even implants, lifts, and areola tattoos as it is necessary to bring back the original form of the breast after a mastectomy.

Certainly the origin of the field has a heroic history and it was after that history when plastic surgery began to emerge. Doctors and others, specifically the patients, started to realise that the aesthetic or plastic cosmetic restorative methods were as much or more a part of the healing process as the corrective part of the surgeries. Thus, the cosmetic counterpart of reconstructive surgery began to have a life of its own during the middle nineteen-hundreds.

Aesthetic plastic surgery or cosmetic surgery involves methods that are intended to “enhance” the appearance with the use of surgical and medical techniques. It is specifically concerned with maintaining the normal appearance, restoring it, or enhancing it beyond the normal level to some aesthetic ideal.

In this day and age, cosmetic or aesthetic plastic surgery is intended for the enhancement of appearance and is specifically sought out by individuals to maintain or exceed an acceptable or even ideal aesthetic result. Some of the procedures that are known today are blepharoplasty, abdominoplasty, breast augmentation or reduction, phalloplasty, face lifts and lip enhancements. Even the so called chemical peels fall under the same category.

The two methods are often pitted against each other as necessary versus superficial, even if the outcomes are the same. The patients desires, may it be elective or because of an injury, trauma, or birth defect, are the same and the positive effects of any plastic surgery will surely go beyond just enhancing the physical appearance.
